Chatham, NJ is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey that is a small village which was settled because of its important crossing of the Passaic River. There is a gap in the Watchung Mountains that was a well-known Native American trail near Chatham, NJ  and it was active in fighting the American Revolutionary War. Today, Chatham homes covers just 2.5 square miles which includes the business district and rail station, hence being known as a pedestrian town.

Chatham homes have become very popular since Chatham, NJ was voted in 2005 to the 100 best places to live in the United States by CNN Money magazine. In 2008, New Jersey Monthly magazine voted it into the 25 best places to live in New Jersey. Located twenty-five miles west of New York City, it is a close commute, yet far enough away from the fast city life. The New Jersey Transit has a stop via  commuter train in Chatham, NJ and there is local bus servicetoo. Route 24, now known as Route 124, runs through the town as well. The Passaic River runs along the boundary of Chatham homes and is part of the area known as The Great Swamp. The marshes and swamps are a result of the drainage from the north, west, and the plateaus of Morristown. It has also become a migratory bird haven. Many of the Chatham homes for sale are uniquely charming and have construction dating back to the colonial and revolutionary timeframe. The area enjoys a humid subtropical climate which has lower cold and higher warm weather than nearby New York City.

 

According to the 2000 US Census, there are approximately 8,500 people in Chatham, NJ with almost 40% having children under 18. The per capita income of $53,000 means an average of $102,000 for each of the Chatham homes.

The School District of the Chathams is the regionalized school district of Chatham, NJ and there is also the St. Patrick School, a Roman Catholic private school, that received the Blue Ribbon of Excellence award, one of the highest educational honors. Because of the small town feel and personality of the town, the school system is geared toward the high number of Chatham homes for sale that contain school age children. There is also a public library located in Chatham, NJ. Chatham is a great place to live for those that work in the big city, but want to raise their families with a small town attitude and culture.
