Historic Bernardsville is known for its equestrian farms, estates and colonial mansions ~ prized for it's natural beauty and excellent school system. Very scenic and pretty, this Somerset Hills town is almost entirely residential but contains some of the last stands of old growth forest on the east coast. Here you'll find narrow streets where Georgian estates and cottages coexist happily with modern homes of every architectural style. There is a definite town center where you'll find small shops, five star restaurants and the train station with a direct route to NYC.
Modern Bernardsville, which now comprises 12.85 square miles, dates back to the Revolutionary War era, when Washington and his troops wintered in neighboring Jockey Hollow. Originally known as Vealtown, in 1840 it was renamed Bernardsville after Sir Francis Bernard, colonial governor of New Jersey from 1758 to 1760.
Bernardsville Homes
Bernardsville is an extremely affluent suburb that began drawing the rich after the railroad came to town in 1872. The railroad line changed the sleepy village of small cottages into a premier destination for wealthy New Yorkers. During the 1860s and 70s bankers, industrialists, and other captains of industry migrated to the Bernardsville Mountain to build lavish mansions and estates.
Still referred to as "The Mountain," this exclusive section of Bernardsville is dotted with rambling country estates on expansive grounds with their own private forests, tennis courts and equestrian stables. Tucked behind the trees at the top of long cobbled driveways, you'll find multi-roomed mansions with long corridors and secret passages. One exceptional 5 bedroom, 7 bathroom, stone and stucco mansion is currently on the market for over 10 million dollars. Built on 15 and a half acres, this 8000 square foot mountain estate has beamed vaulted ceilings, 4 fireplaces, a barn, guest cottage, tennis court and outdoor pavillion.
Of course, not everyone wants to live on the mountain. In general, the average home buyer is looking for less than 5 bedrooms on less than 5 acres. Most people who choose to buy a home in Bernardsville are professionals who work in NYC and enjoy the easy commute, great schools, natural beauty and well-planned city center. Though the glamour of the mountain is never far, the Bernardsville real estate market features a number of beautiful historic homes, brick colonials and cape cods for under 500K.
